About this coffee

Bette Buna Lot U, Cherry Ascension Highlands, is produced by Bette Buna in Megadu, Guji. This impact lot is produced from carefully sorted cherries sourced from highland farms and processed as a natural using a 96-hour CO₂ fermentation method.

The process begins with selected cherries placed in hermetic barrels or high-capacity bags. Carbon dioxide is introduced to create an oxygen-free environment, allowing fermentation to take place under controlled atmospheric conditions. Over 96 hours, the CO₂-managed environment provides the production team with a structured framework for managing fermentation time, atmosphere, microbial activity and lot separation before drying.

As an impact lot, almost €1 per kilo of green coffee is dedicated to supporting Bette Buna’s inclusive farm team, which includes people with disabilities, mothers at risk, single mothers and elderly community members involved in running the nursery. This contribution supports paid work, practical inclusion and the continued operation of the nursery as part of Bette Buna’s wider community development model.

Once fermentation is complete, the coffee is dried and prepared according to the required lot specifications before further assessment and export preparation. Lot U reflects Bette Buna’s focus on highland cherry selection, controlled CO₂ fermentation, traceable production and practical investment in inclusive employment around Megadu, Guji.

Pricing breakdown

For each bag sold, we trace the money as far as we reasonably can: from payments at origin, through processing, transport and importing, to the costs of roasting and selling the coffee. We believe there is value in sharing this information, while framing it with the necessary care.

The numbers below are based on a 250 g bag size.

€1,62 for the farmers

Bette Buna paid 200 birr/kg of cherry. The farmers grow coffee, selectively pick fresh cherry and sell this to Bette Buna for processing and export.

The Ethiopian birr is a fairly volatile currency. Additionally, we need to convert from fresh cherry. The amount of fresh cherry required to produce 1 kg of export-ready green coffee varies, but is generally somewhere between 5 and 6 kg depending on the variety, density, quality and processing method. In this instance, we’re assuming 5,2 kg of cherry produces 1 kg of exportable green coffee.

€0,27 for Bette Buna's inclusive farm team

As an impact lot, $0,5/lbs of green coffee is dedicated to supporting Bette Buna’s inclusive farm team, which includes people with disabilities, mothers at risk or single mothers, and elderly people who run the nursery. This works out to about €0,27 per 250 g bag of roasted coffee.

Running total: €1,89

€2,67 for Bette Buna and the exporter

We know how much was paid for the coffee, but we don't have a detailed breakdown of how this amount is divided between Bette Buna and the exporter. It covers processing the cherries, preparing the coffee for export and the wider costs of operating both parts of the supply chain.

Running total: €4,56

€0,49 for customs and transport

Because of conflicts and unrest along the regular transport routes, Bette Buna made the difficult decision to ship this coffee by air. This raises the cost and environmental impact of transport significantly compared to sea freight.

Running total: €5,05

€2,07 for the importer, Falcon Coffees

Our importer, Falcon Coffees, receives about €2,07 per sold bag of this coffee, which covers their costs including staff, quality control, warehousing, handling, sourcing and other operating costs, as well as their profit margin.

Running total: €7,12

€1,31 roasting overhead

Roasting coffee requires a workspace, roasting equipment and energy, as well as the machinery and materials needed to pack and label the finished coffee. We currently estimate these costs to be €1,31 per bag of roasted coffee, regardless of the specific coffee.

Running total: €8,43

The remainder covers investments, expenses and donations

We apply fixed margins based on our cost. For retail, that's 65%; for wholesale that's 40%; rounded up to the next decimal. In numbers, if a coffee costs us €10, retail pricing is €28,60; wholesale is €16,70. For this particular coffee, at this pricing, we retain €15,67. This covers taxes, allows us to invest in coffee and materials, and donate to our beneficiaries.

If you bought this coffee through any other platform, the only number that can vary is how much is going to us and how much is going to the seller.

Final total: €24,10
